When Konrad becomes ill he calls any doctor of specialty to come and heal him no matter what the cost or how they went about it-except alchemy. Alphonse Frankenstein coincidentally aided in Dr. Polidori's punishment for alchemy gone wrong and banned Victor and Elizabeth from his secret library of alchemy when he discovers them snooping one day. Towards the end of the novel when Mr. Frankenstein discovers what his children have been doing to save Konrad's life he is very surprised and upset at the same time. However he is grateful simultaneously when Konrad was healed by the elixir of Life, even though it was created from that of which he hates.
